Service delivery by the Oshakati Town Council to its residents has been boosted by the finalisation of the construction of a brand new fire station at a cost of N$8.8 million.
The Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Erastus Uutoni inaugurated the fire station in Oshakati last Thursday.
The town has been without a properly fixed functioning fire station for some time now and only used to operate from a temporary station.
The completion of the new fire station will enable the Town Council to conveniently take care of fire incidents within the town.
This is the first phase constructed at a cost of N$8.8 million and the second phase is estimated to cost N$6.7 million.
According to the Oshakati Mayor, Leonard Hango, it was necessary to embark on such a project given the growth of the town and the increase in the number of residents.
In the same vein, 770 erven in Onawa Extension 7 and 8 are to be electrified at a cost of N$11.5 million.
The electrification project was presented during the official groundbreaking ceremony in the Onawa area of Oshakati.
Uutoni stated that the electrification will have a positive impact on the livelihood of the people who reside in Onawa especially students and learners who otherwise had to depend on poor light to study and do their school work.
The project is a result of a smart partnership between Oshakati Premiere Electric and Oshakati Town Council.
The project has to date enabled service connection to 2 145 households in informal areas of Oshakati.
Residents of Onawa Extension 7 and 8 were granted an opportunity to connect their electricity for free. The deal ensured that the town council and its partner will carry the connection fee amounting to N$10 395.
Mayor Hango said that this process includes formalising some informal settlements and relocating some residents to areas where they will have access to municipal services.
