Team Namibia won the Angolan Independence Celebration Swimming Competition held over the weekend.
Namibian swimmers topped the medal chart with 22 medals.
Angola followed with 19 medals, while South Africa placed third with nine.
Clube Náutico da Ilha de Luanda, a selected Angolan team, earned five medals and took fourth place.
Selecao de Portugal came fifth with four medals, and Selecao de Mozambique finished last with two.
Namibian swimmer Ainoa Naukusho was named the best female athlete and the best overall athlete of the tournament.
Team Namibia also received a trophy for their overall performance.
Jo-Ann Manuel, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, congratulated the team on their success.
“Let me, on behalf of the government and the nation at large, thank the Namibia Aquatic Federation. From the leadership under the capable president, thank you all for the work you are doing on behalf of the nation. To all technical officials, especially the coaches, well done indeed. To the parents and guardians, we are indebted to your commitment and generosity. And lastly, the athletes. We are all here because of you. If you, the athletes, were not there, we wouldn’t be here. You are the most important person in the chain. Therefore, thank you and thank you again. Athletes, please remain in the water for some of us to equally exist,” said Manuel.
