Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC Namibia) has awarded over N$4 million to support employee-run businesses since the launch of its internal Dreamers Program.

Launched in 2021, the MTC Dreamers Program provides financial assistance and entrepreneurship training to employees running part-time businesses alongside their full-time jobs.

“To date, the program has assisted 80 MTC ambassadors with over N$4 million,” said MTC’s chief brand, marketing, communications, and sustainability officer, Tim Ekandjo.

Ekandjo said the initiative was established to help staff pursue their dreams of owning businesses while still working at the company.

“Just as we are philanthropic to the nation, we are extending the same courtesy internally by creating sustainable value for our own ambassadors,” he said.

This year, the program reviewed 75 business proposals and awarded N$950,000 to 18 employees. This was announced over the weekend at a ceremony in Windhoek.

The entrepreneurship category funded thirteen employees, each receiving N$50,000.

The program awarded N$30,000 to four employees in talent development and N$60,000 to one employee in the social cause category.

All successful applicants will also undergo a three-day entrepreneurship training course.

Hilaria Nghiikoko, who runs a mini-shop in Okongo, said the funding helped her open a mini-market in her village.

“The funding I received enabled me to establish a mini-market in my village, providing essential goods to residents who previously had to travel long distances. I am grateful for the support, as it has helped me generate extra income and create jobs.”

Bertha Nangombe, another beneficiary, said, “This support from the Dreamers Program is an injection that will help me expand my social project focused on clothing and feeding vulnerable people. I am excited about the opportunity and committed to making it a success.”

The Dreamers Program forms part of MTC’s internal philanthropic efforts to promote employee entrepreneurship.

In 2023, MTC availed N$1.8 million for extended financial support to 30 of its employees.
