Footballer Peter Shalulile says he wants to see more Namibian players secure professional contracts and play at the FIFA Club World Cup.
Shalulile shared this during an interview with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as he prepared to compete in the world’s biggest club tournament, taking place in the United States.
Shalulile, who grew up in Golgota, Katutura, plays for Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club in South Africa. His club is in Group F alongside Borussia Dortmund from Germany, Fluminense from Brazil, and Ulsan from South Korea.
Sundowns’ first match is scheduled for today at 23h00 local time against Ulsan.
The Brave Warriors’ captain said his personal goal is to score at least four goals in the group stage. But more than that, he said he hopes to see more Namibian players reach the same level.
“Personally, I wish to score four goals in the group stage… which will be an achievement. But for more achievements, I wish for more Namibians to reach that stage because it is possible to do it. If I can go there, it means that anything is possible. If you want to achieve. It is there for you to go out and achieve it,” said Shalulile.
He said he is excited for the tournament and hopes that Namibians and the rest of the continent will support African teams.
“I am excited, waiting for the kick-off day. My people back home will be glued to their TV screens waiting to see their boy doing good at the FIFA Club World Cup. Where I come from is a place where people play street football, and when I played, I realised that I am also good and I just kept on going until I turned professional,” he said.
