The African Patient Organisation Connect (APOC) launched its Namibian chapter in Windhoek on Wednesday, aiming to strengthen patient advocacy and influence inclusive healthcare policies across southern Africa.
The launch forms part of APOC’s 2025 regional training programme.
The first session was held in Zambia on 5-6 June, with the next set for Mauritius on 7- 8 August. Roche supports APOC, which equips patient-led organisations with the tools, skills, and networks to drive healthcare reform and amplify community voices in policy spaces.
Executive director of the ministry of health and social services,Penda Ithindi, said patient empowerment is key to improving health systems.
“We must strengthen the voice of patients by building organised networks and empowering communities,” he said. “The Ministry welcomes collaboration with APOC and its partners to move forward together toward improved healthcare for all.”
Thomas Renwick, General Manager of Roche Pharma South Africa and Sub-Region, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to health equity.
“At Roche, we are deeply committed to enabling stronger, more resilient health systems through meaningful partnerships,” he said.
“APOC exemplifies the kind of collaboration that ensures patients are not just beneficiaries of care, but active participants in shaping it.”
Rolf Hansen, CEO of the Cancer Association of Namibia, called APOC a unique and transformative initiative.
“APOC is more than a programme, it’s a movement,” he said. “It connects patient leaders across borders, ensuring we speak with a united voice that can influence meaningful change.”
The Namibian chapter brings together local and regional partners to promote patient-led policy advocacy, develop evidence-based engagement strategies, and support community-driven leadership.
As APOC expands, it aims to form a strong continental network focused on equity, access, and representation in healthcare systems.
The initiative’s partners include the Cancer Association of Namibia, Teal Sisters of Zambia, the Haemophilia Association of Mauritius, and Roche Products Sub-Region.
