Nghitumbwa wins WBO global title

Namibian boxer Fillipus “Energy” Nghitumbwa won the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global Super Bantamweight champion on Saturday night after defeating South Africa’s Mxolisi Zuma.

Nghitumbwa knocked out Zuma in the sixth round, handing him his first professional loss. 

Zuma fell to the canvas after taking heavy punches to the head, prompting the referee to stop the fight at two minutes and 56 seconds.

Nghitumbwa now holds 16 professional fights, with 14 wins by knockout and two losses. The victory moves him closer to a world title challenge.

The fight took place over the weekend at the Windhoek Country Club under the theme “Road to World Title Boxing Bonanza” and was promoted by veteran boxing promoter Nestor Tobias. 

Other local fighters were also featured on the card.

In a Super Flyweight Championship bout, Erastus Shapaka retained his title by majority decision after 10 rounds against Fabianus Lamek. 

Paulus Filipus knocked out Festus Semion two minutes and 47 seconds into their fight. Filipus now has three fights, winning two and losing one, while Semion has eight fights, with two wins and six losses.

Fredrick Nghutananye became the new national featherweight champion after beating Abed Joseph. 

Nestor Thomas won his professional debut by knocking out John Herman. Martin “The Alligator” Mukungu stopped Andreas Endjala in two minutes and 27 seconds.
