Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) has announced the deployment of 5G services in Namibia. The announcement was made this week at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair.

With the soft launch, MTC becomes the first operator in the country to introduce the technology.

The service is currently available in Ongwediva, Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, and Windhoek. The company said more areas will be covered in the coming months as part of an aggressive rollout plan.

MTC chief technical and information officer, Monica Nehemia, said the technology will be a key driver of Namibia’s digital economy.

“We are proud to make 5G available on the market. MTC remains committed to leading Namibia’s digital transformation through the provision of reliable and the latest network technology that facilitates access to information, critical services, and communication, thereby bridging the digital divide. The connectivity power and seamlessness that come with 5G are exactly what we need in propelling the digitisation of enterprise solutions across the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, cloud computing, and payments, thereby enhancing business operations and efficiency and fostering innovation and scalability,” she said.

Nehemia added that MTC aims to become Namibia’s leading purpose-driven technology company by 2030.

“From immersive experiences and gaming to smart warehousing, telemedicine, and smart irrigation, the possibilities are limitless as we work towards achieving our national goal of becoming a smart digital economic enabler,” she said.

The company said the public launch will follow soon. The move comes after MTC successfully trialled 5G technology in February 2024.

“This is a significant and historic milestone for our country’s technological infrastructure and digital journey that saw us journey from 2G all the way to 5G,” MTC said.
