Erongo region education director Erenfriede Stephanus has called on parents and schools to remain calm and vigilant following reports of new Covid-19 cases in Walvis Bay and a confirmed mpox case in Swakopmund.

The appeal comes after two local schools, Duinesig High School and Seaside Primary School, informed parents of confirmed Covid-19 cases over the weekend.

Stephanus said the education directorate is monitoring the situation and working closely with health officials in the region.

“We are on the ground and busy investigating the matter. We call for calm from schools, parents and learners alike while we await official communication from both line ministries,” she said.

In a letter to parents, Duinesig High School confirmed that two learners from the same household, attending Narraville Primary School in Walvis Bay, had tested positive for Covid-19. The school assured parents that all necessary precautions were in place.

“Please be assured that appropriate health and safety measures are being implemented to ensure a safe environment for all learners and staff,” the Duinesig management stated.

The school urged parents and learners to return to basic health measures, including wearing masks, regular hand washing, social distancing, and monitoring for symptoms.

The school stated that it would take additional action in accordance with guidance from the relevant authorities and the line ministry, adding that national examinations are currently in progress.

Seaside Primary School also issued a notice to parents referencing both Covid-19 and Mpox.

While awaiting an official directive, the school announced the reinstatement of Covid-19 measures from Monday.

It also urged parents to ensure that learners wear masks to school and to keep at home any children showing symptoms of illness.

The schools also urged communities to act responsibly and avoid spreading misinformation.

“Panic and the spread of misinformation will not help and should be avoided.”
