The City of Windhoek will investigate the use of a municipal dump truck that was seen displaying a political party flag. The incident has raised public concern over the misuse of city property.
Social justice activist Michael Amushelelo reported on Saturday that he saw the truck being used for a political campaign.
He said the conduct was unacceptable and called for action against the driver.
“My fellow Namibians, today I witnessed a City of Windhoek municipal dump truck being used for the corrupt regime campaign,” he said.
He demanded a disciplinary hearing and the most severe punishment for the driver.
Amushelelo said municipal resources belong to residents, not political parties.
“The City of Windhoek doesn’t belong to any political party, but it acted arrogantly, similar to the behaviour of Windhoek, and should serve all who reside in it and not a particular party,” he said.
He alleged that the driver refused to remove the flag when approached.
“I asked him politely to remove the flag, because perhaps he doesn’t know what he is doing.
He said the driver acted with arrogance similar to that of his party.
“The City of Windhoek is a public institution mandated to serve all residents impartially and without favour, regardless of their political affiliation,” it said City of Windhoek spokesperson, Harold Akwenye.
Akwenye said the municipality condemned the act and noted that it does not reflect its values.
Akwenye said the conduct was unacceptable and did not reflect the City of Windhoek’s organisational values or its mandate.
The city said it will investigate the matter and take appropriate action.
“An investigation into the matter will be instituted to establish the circumstances surrounding it, and appropriate action will be taken in line with our disciplinary procedures.”
He said the city encouraged residents to continue reporting misuse of public property.
“We proffer our appreciation to members of the public who continue to report many incidents and hold us accountable as an institution,” it said.
“We urge all Windhoek residents to report any form of abuse, misuse or neglect of public property, vehicle or material without fear, favour or contradictions.”
The municipality said it remains committed to delivering services neutrally and professionally.
“The City of Windhoek remains committed to upholding professionalism, neutrality, and the highest standards of public service,” it said.
