Mondesa Clinic in Swakopmund reopened its doors on Monday. The clinic had been closed for a year after a fire caused extensive damage to the facility.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services confirmed the reopening, saying renovation work has been completed and all health services have been restored.

The Erongo Regional Council’s directorate of health and social services cleared the clinic for use following repairs.

Erongo health director Anna Jonas thanked the Mondesa community for its patience during the closure and apologised for the inconvenience caused.

“We are pleased to announce that the renovations have been completed and all health services previously offered at Mondesa Clinic will be fully restored,” a public notice from her office stated.

The clinic closed on 3 February 2025 after a fire damaged the building, pharmacy, medical supplies and administrative records.

At the time, the then Erongo police spokesperson, chief Inspector Ileni Shapumba, said a security guard on duty heard several explosions before a neighbour alerted her to the fire.

The guard informed her supervisor, who contacted the Swakopmund municipality fire department.

Firefighters responded quickly and contained the blaze before it spread further.

Initial reports indicated that the fire likely started in the pharmacy. Consultation rooms remained mostly intact, with limited damage to medicines and electronic equipment. No injuries or deaths were reported.

Mondesa Clinic will operate from Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 17h00. It will also be open on Saturdays from 08h00 to 17h00.

The reopening is expected to ease pressure on nearby health facilities and restore access to basic health services for Mondesa residents.
