Outjo municipality re-advertise CEO position

Martin Endjala The Outjo Municipality has resolved to re-advertise the position for chief executive officer following meetings between the council and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development. This occurred one month after the council missed the ministry's March deadline. At the time, the ministry issued a directive to the council concerning complaints of irregularities in the recruitment of the CEO, Mahne Kruger. As such, the Outjo council was directed to cancel the process and re-advertise the position. The ministry also mandated that the short-listing, interviewing, and vacancy-filling processes be completed within three months. Outjo has been without a substantive…

ECN assessing registration of inmates countrywide

Erasmus Shalihaxwe The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has acknowledged a complaint from the Landless Peoples Movement (LPM) for not registering inmates. The LPM’s spokesperson, Lifalaza Simataa wrote to the ECN on Monday that the electoral body is excluding Namibians who are incarcerated from registering for voter cards. Simataa stated that every eligible Namibian should have the opportunity to participate in their democratic rights. The ECN's mandate is to ensure that all Namibians have the ability to register to vote. “This unfair and intentional exclusion of inmates is robbing these Namibians of their democratic rights, further dehumanising and excluding them…

Erasmus Shalihaxwe The Electoral Commission of Namibia’s chief electoral and referenda officer Peter Shaama said even though the number of registered voters keeps increasing week by week, the low turnout is still concerning. Shaama was speaking during a media briefing at the weekly update of registered voters last week. He said that while ECN appreciates those who have registered as voters since the first day of registration, the commission has noted with great concern a considerable decline in turnout during the third, fourth, and fifth weeks of the General Registration of Voters (GRV) between 17 June and 6 July. “The…

Did the system fail the youth? A Franz Fanon lens of Analysis

Johanna Hipangelwa In Namibia, as in many post-colonial nations, the question of whether the system has failed its youth is a pressing one. Franz Fanon's seminal work, particularly his ideas on decolonization and the psychological effects of colonialism, offers a lens through which we can critically examine this issue. Namibia’s independence from South Africa in 1990 after a protracted struggle, initially held promise for its youth. Liberation movements like SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization) fought not just for political sovereignty but also for social justice and economic equity. However, decades later, many young Namibians find themselves grappling with systemic…

Swartbooi defends RedForce action

Martin Endjala The Landless People's Movement Party’s (LPM) leader, Bernadus Swartbooi, said that the much-criticised Redforce Debt Management Company (RedForce) should not be blamed for doing its job. He argued that the local authorities should bear the responsibility for their ineffective revenue collection. Swartbooi made this statement at a press conference earlier this month in response to increases in electricity and water prices. "We must ask the question: why have local authorities, post-independence, had reduced capacity for revenue collection? This is because the funding to local authorities has decreased. It is because that funding went down that the local authorities…
