Namdeb Diamond Corporation has launched a book documenting more than three decades of its operations and contribution to Namibia’s diamond industry.
The book, titled Mining for Good: The Namdeb Story 1994–2024, was unveiled at an event attended by industry leaders, partners and stakeholders.
The publication traces Namdeb’s development since its establishment in 1994 as a 50:50 partnership between the Government of Namibia and the De Beers Group.
It also explores the broader history of diamond mining in Namibia, beginning with the first discovery in 1908.
Namdeb said the book presents a narrative on the value of natural diamonds and their role in economic development. It records the company’s partnerships, milestones and social impacts over the past 30 years.
Namdeb chief executive officer Riaan Burger said the publication shows how the diamond industry has contributed to the country’s development.
“Our natural diamond story is that of a development catalyst, and the book does well in documenting Namdeb’s contribution to value addition, as well as the company’s role in the transformation of Oranjemund from a closed mining town into a sustainable, open Namibian community,” Burger said.
He said the responsible management of natural resources has enabled the diamond sector to generate national revenue, create opportunities for Namibians, and support community development.
The book also reflects on institutional and cultural changes within the company over the past three decades.
The minister of agriculture, water and land reform and the company’s first managing director, Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi, said the organisation has undergone significant transformation since its founding.
The publication draws on interviews and accounts from policymakers, executives, employees and union representatives.
It captures experiences of people who worked at the company during periods of market volatility, technological change and rising costs.
The commissioning author, Robin Sherbourne, said the book relied on various sources, including company records, government statistics, academic research and industry data.
“The book is deliberately presented in a mostly neutral tone to allow readers to better understand Namdeb’s legacy and impact,” Sherbourne said.
Namdeb said the publication comes at a time when the global diamond industry faces growing competition from lab-grown diamonds and changes in market conditions.
The company said the book highlights Namibia’s role as a producer of natural diamonds.
