Municipal work crews in Walvis Bay are working to clear large sand drifts that have accumulated on the B2 Road at the town’s eastern entrance, following strong east winds that swept through large parts of the coast since the start of this week.

The affected stretch, the lane lined with palm trees, has seen heaps of sand blown across the road, prompting a coordinated response by the Walvis Bay Municipality.

Crews manning earth-moving equipment have been deployed to remove the sand, with traffic officers on-site to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure public safety.

“Our teams have been on the ground with heavy machinery, supported by traffic officers who are directing traffic to ensure safety,” the municipality stated.

The clean-up efforts are ongoing, coinciding with increased commuter traffic volumes expected late in the afternoons.

The Walvis Bay municipality urged road users to approach the area with caution and patience.

For everyone’s safety, the municipality advised drivers to reduce speed, remain alert near the work zone, follow the directions of traffic officials at all times, and switch on headlights to improve visibility.

The weather forecast indicates that east wind conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Service, Walvis Bay, along with Swakopmund and Henties Bay, will experience warm conditions with plenty of sunshine, and temperatures will reach highs of 29°C today and 28°C on Friday.

The weather forecast states that these conditions are the result of continued east wind activity, which may lead to further sand accumulation on roadways.

The Walvis Bay municipality expressed gratitude to the public for their continued cooperation and understanding as efforts continue to maintain safe and accessible roads for all.
