De Beers Group is strengthening its commitment to sustainability through key developments in renewable energy, aligned with its Building Forever programme.
The company has entered into new partnerships aimed at expanding clean energy use across its operations. Namdeb recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with NamPower to scale up its current 34 MW wind energy project. Early assessments suggest the project could expand to between 100 100MW and 150 MW, connecting to the NamPower grid.
In Botswana, Debswana has partnered with Botswana Power Corporation to support renewable energy integration. In South Africa, Envusa Energy has commissioned renewable energy projects that will supply Venetia Mine from 2026.
At the recent JCK Las Vegas Show, De Beers unveiled new downstream initiatives aimed at promoting natural diamonds. The Ombré Desert Diamonds collection serves as one of these initiatives, drawing inspiration from the desert landscapes that host numerous diamond mines. The new design joins previous De Beers “beacon” products such as the eternity ring and three-stone ring. These beacons aim to create emotional connections with consumers and drive demand for natural diamond jewellery.
De Beers also launched Origin, De Beers Group, a branded polished diamond line. Origin allows retailers to share the individual stories of diamonds sourced from De Beers with digital tools that offer customers access to provenance information and brand storytelling. Origin enhances consumer confidence by providing diamonds with verified ethical sourcing.
In upstream activities, De Beers reported the completion of airborne geophysical surveys in Angola, marking a milestone in its exploration work. In the midstream segment, the group reiterated its focus on traceability.
De Beers announced that its Element Six Oregon Centre would produce technology diamonds for the first time. This milestone is part of a US$130 million investment in its Portland facility. The synthetic diamonds produced are intended for industrial applications.
Chief Executive Officer Al Cook said, “One year on from announcing our Origins strategy, we have made fast and meaningful progress in delivering our vision. We have met every target that we announced back in 2024. Every part of De Beers is evolving to create lasting value, benefitting shareholders, the industry and consumers.”
De Beers Group is the world’s largest diamond producer by value, with mining operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia, and South Africa.
