The National Housing Enterprise will begin constructing 100 houses for low-income earners in Eenhana this month.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Eenhana Extension 10 on Monday, NHE manager for infrastructure development Indileni Set-Sam Iipinge said the project responds to housing demand in the Ohangwena region.

He said the development targets low-income earners.

“This initiative is not just another project on our books – it is a direct response to the housing demand for low-income earners, the very citizens who need affordable shelter the most,” Iipinge said.

According to Iipinge, the project will deliver one-bedroom houses of 30.1 square metre, two-bedroom houses of 42.7 square metre and three-bedroom houses of 53.6 square metres, bringing the total to 100 houses.

He said the first phase has a construction value of N$7.4 million and will start on 16 February 2026.

“This phase will run over a period of five calendar months, excluding the builders’ holiday, with an expected completion date of 30 June 2026,” he said.

Iipinge said the project will also create jobs.

“By then, we expect to have created approximately 100 jobs, providing income and skills development opportunities to local residents,” he said.

He said the last major NHE project in Eenhana was completed in 2015, when 284 houses were built at a cost of N$80 million.

“Today, more than a decade later, we return to continue that legacy and to reaffirm NHE’s presence and commitment in the Ohangwena Region,” Iipinge said.

Addressing contractors, he urged a focus on delivery and quality.

“Let us focus on completing the project on time, within budget, and to the highest standards. Before thinking of luxuries, let us think of quality. Let us think of the workers,” he added.

At the same event, the mayor of Eenhana, Omri-Onn Kavandje, welcomed the project.

Kavandje said it will help address the town’s housing backlog and support local families.

Kavandje said construction will begin with 30 houses at Ekolola, with the remaining 70 to be built in later phases.

Kavandje said NHE has built close to 400 houses in Eenhana between 1998, 2004/05 and 2015.

Kavandje encouraged residents to register with NHE to benefit from the remaining houses.

“We encourage residents to register with NHE to benefit from the remaining 70 houses, ensuring that more families can access affordable, quality homes,” he said.

He also urged contractors to prioritise local employment. “Contractors should recruit local people, especially in positions where they are qualified and deserving,” Kavandje said.
