Founding President hospitalized with COVID-19

President Hage Geingob has announced that founding President Sam Nujoma has been hospitalized with COVID-19.

“I hereby wish to inform the Namibian people that HE Dr Sam Shafishuna Nujoma, the Founding President of the Republic of Namibia was admitted to hospital on 6 December 2020, after testing positive for COVID-19,” said Geingob.

“The Founding President is receiving treatment in hospital, is in a stable condition and is showing encouraging signs of improvement.”

This comes as Nujoma’s sister Sofia Asino died of COVID-19 in Windhoek in August this year. Asino was cremated shortly after her death.

Vice-President Nangolo Mbumba also contracted the coronavirus earlier this year.

“I wish to reassure the Namibian people that there is no cause for concern at the moment. I appeal for calm and wish to assure that the Namibian public will be informed regularly on progress regarding the medical condition of the Founding President. I wish the Founding President a prompt recovery,” said the President.

This comes as COVID-19 cases have been on the increase in the last few weeks leading to fears that Namibia could be headed for a second wave.

President Geingob last week said that Namibia could not economically afford to enter a second wave.

Namibia has thus far recorded 15,219 cases and 152 total deaths.
