Gazza eyes job creation through local business ventures

Kwaito artist Lazarus “Gazza” Shiimi has ended a brief venture related to the international defence sector and is now refocusing on music and local business projects in Namibia.

Shiimi said the separation from a UAE-based manufacturer of armoured vehicles and security equipment was amicable and followed limited support from local stakeholders.

He said the decision allows him to focus on areas where he can have a direct impact on youth development and economic growth at home.

“When an opportunity arises that could potentially build skills and industry for our people, I believe in exploring it fully. The aim is to lure more investors who are passionate about youth development,” he told the Windhoek Observer.

He stated that the goal of creating technical jobs and industrial opportunities for Namibians motivated his involvement in the defence-related venture.

“My association with that venture was driven solely by that goal of creating tangible job prospects and industrial growth for Namibia, but there lacked support from local stakeholders. While that specific path did not materialise as envisioned, and we have since parted ways, the underlying mission to contribute to our economy remains unwavering,” Shiimi said.

He said the experience reinforced his decision to focus on business ventures he can manage more directly.

Gazza is now concentrating on existing interests in mining, commodity trading and agriculture, which he said are already creating jobs.

“This isn’t a retreat from business; it’s a refinement. The ambition to industrialise and create is now being directed into areas where I can build more directly and see the impact on our community. My goal is to employ 2,000 Namibians in direct jobs speaking to the NDP6. That intention is stronger than ever,” he said.

Shiimi said music remains central to his life and work, adding that he is preparing for the rescheduled 2.0 Milli concert and continues to release new music ahead of an upcoming album.

He said his approach to business draws from the same discipline and planning that helped him build his music career. For him, the roles of an artist and an entrepreneur are intertwined.

“I have simply broadened my spectrum. Music is the soul; business is a tool for development. Both allow me to give back to the youth who have supported me and to the nation that raised me. The separation from previous ventures isn’t an end; it’s a strategic step toward more focused and meaningful beginnings right here at home.”
