President Hage Geingob on behalf of all Namibians expressed his profound sadness upon learning of the death of a former President of Finland, Martti Ahtisaari, who played a pivotal role in the country’s journey to independence and peace.

Martti Ahtisaari, whose name is intricately woven into the history of Namibia as a true friend and an international peacemaker, was not just a distant diplomat but a person who understood the Namibian struggle for freedom and justice.

In his tributary message, the President said that Ahtisaari’s connection with Namibia dates back to 1975 when he was appointed as a senator to the Council of the United Nations Institute for Namibia (UNIN).

This initial engagement paved the way for his appointment in 1978 as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Namibia under the leadership of Kurt Waldheim.

In 1989, Ahtisaari took on the challenging role of leading the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) in Namibia, a task that was globally recognized for its success in transitioning from conflict to peace.

“His leadership was instrumental in guiding Namibia towards independence and self-determination,” Geingob said.

The President said that Ahtisaari played multi-faceted roles as a diplomat, negotiator, peacekeeper, and blue helmet, all of which he executed with remarkable success.

“His understanding of Namibia’s quest for freedom and justice endeared him to the Namibian people,” he said.

As a symbol of the enduring respect and gratitude of Namibia, Ahtisaari was honoured as an honorary citizen of the Republic of Namibia. Streets and schools have been named after him, serving as a constant reminder of his exceptional contributions to the birth of a free Namibia.

“Today, Namibia not only mourns the loss of a great friend but also celebrates the rich legacy of peace and international service left behind by a Nobel Peace laureate whose name will forever be associated with Namibia,” the President said.

President Geingob extended sincere condolences to the Ahtisaari family and the people of Finland on behalf of the people of Namibia.

According to Geingob, the passing of Athissari is a moment to reflect on the enduring spirit of friendship and the indomitable quest for peace that will forever be associated with him.
