Hunting body denies blocking global participation

The Namibia Professional Hunting Association (NPHA) has rejected claims that individuals or groups were excluded from participating in events related to the hunting sector.

NAPHA President Hannes du Plessis said recent commentary has raised concerns about participation, representation and access.

He stated that set rules govern participation at international events like the Dallas Safari Club.

“Participation at such shows is governed by strict international rules, and only registered exhibitors who have paid for stand space may market or sell services,” Du Plessis said on Friday.

He said these rules are not set by NAPHA and apply to all participants.

He said NAPHA follows the same approach internally and does not allow members to share booth space for commercial purposes.

“This is not about exclusion but about fairness towards those who invest significantly in building their presence over time.”

Du Plessis said members of NETHO were not excluded from attending the Dallas Safari Club.

“They were present at the Dallas Safari Club, supported in their participation, and given access to the convention, with NTB facilitating and funding flights, accommodation, and meals,” the statement reads.

“They were invited to spend time at the NAPHA booth to observe, ask questions, and to gain first-hand insight into how the international market operates. They were also offered introductions to established outfitters and guidance throughout. To now suggest that participation was blocked does not reflect the full picture,” it said.

He further said it remains open to engagement with stakeholders in the sector.

The association, established in 1974, represents the trophy hunting sector in Namibia.

It works with the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism on wildlife policy and conservation.

It also provides training for hunting guides and supports initiatives such as the Age-Related Trophy Measuring System.
