HyIron to source local iron ore for green steel

HyIron Green Technologies (Pty) Ltd will explore sourcing high-potential iron ore domestically and process it using its established green hydrogen-powered technology under a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Broadmind Mining (Pty) Ltd and the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme (NGH2P).

The agreement aims to build a sustainable, low-carbon green industrial value chain in Namibia.

It will also strengthen the country’s mineral beneficiation capacity and support its goal of becoming a green industrial hub in Africa.

The partnership will focus on Broadmind’s critical mineral assets, including rare-earth elements and iron ore, alongside HyIron’s green direct reduced iron (DRI) process powered by renewable hydrogen.

Together, the parties will test the compatibility of Broadmind’s ore, conduct pilot beneficiation trials, and explore opportunities for green steel production.

Broadmind will advance exploration and beneficiation trials to develop feedstock for HyIron’s green iron plant.

HyIron will provide technical parameters for scaling up production.

The cooperation is expected to support local supply chains, create jobs in mining and metallurgy, and drive hydrogen-based processing skills transfer.

NGH2P will coordinate stakeholders, guide permitting, support infrastructure planning, and help secure concessional and blended finance instruments to speed up project implementation.

Namibia is working under the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) Industry Decarbonisation Programme, which could unlock up to US$250 million in climate finance to support green industrialisation.

“The Broadmind-HyIron-NGH2P partnership demonstrates how multi-sector cooperation can support this vision, creating local green jobs, boosting economic diversification, and enabling the production of future-proof materials for the global clean energy transition,” said James Mnyupe, head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme.

Johannes Michels, chief executive officer of HyIron Green Technologies, said the collaboration will allow the company to expand its technology within Namibia.

“The agreement between Broadmind, HyIron, and NGH2P is a clear demonstration of how Namibia’s mineral wealth can be transformed into long-term industrial value through strategic collaboration and technology,” said Sidney Martin, executive chairman of Broadmind Mining.
