Just Saying with Matts Haikali

Enthusiasm and unwavering support of fans is often celebrated as a driving force behind the success of teams and the growth of the game of football. Namibian’s all over the country have witnessed an overwhelming surge in support for Eshoke Chula Chula, both in Oshakati and Windhoek.

This unprecedented backing from fans has injected new life into local football. However, as the old adage goes, “With great power comes great responsibility,” and this newfound popularity presents its own set of challenges that demand a thoughtful response from football administrators.

Am just saying, the scenes that unfolded during the recent match between Eshoke Chula Chula and African Stars might have brought smiles to the faces of Stars’ management, but it was a different story for the Hage Geingob stadium management.

Am just saying, while Stars Management might have been pleased with the financial rewards, it was a nightmare for the Hage Geingob stadium management. The stadium’s capacity was exceeded, posing serious safety concerns.

Am just saying, it’s essential for football administrators to appreciate the passion and support demonstrated by fans, it’s equally critical to recognize that local football needs to strike a balance.

Am just saying, it is imperative for the football administration to handle this surge in enthusiasm carefully. The recent incidents highlight the need for a rethink in how football is managed and promoted to ensure that sponsors and partners want to be associated with a brand that does not court controversy.

Am just saying, one aspect that urgently needs addressing is the understanding of event management dynamics. It boggles the mind that people who are hired as security personnel, were enjoying the games as the paying fans.

Am just saying, a manual on stadium safety recommends that home teams must provide crowd stewards to ensure safety at sports events, a basic necessity in the modern era. Incidents like the throwing of cans should not be tolerated, as safety at sports events should be of paramount importance.

Please do not get me wrong, am not complaining, all am just saying is that while the influx of fans is undoubtedly positive, it’s time for clubs to explore creative alternatives to the traditional venues.

Am just saying it’s about time that sports administrators start considering the establishment of theme parks where people can enjoy the games without the hazards of overcrowding. This approach, adopted by organizations like FIFA and the Olympics, not only enhances the fan experience but can also becomes an economic driver. It provides opportunities for sound providers, entertainers, security personnel, and vendors to benefit, contributing to the clubs’ finances.

And finally am just saying, last-minute changes to game schedules can be detrimental to the progress toward a professional setup, particularly when considering broadcast rights. Such disorganization can undermine the reputation and commercial viability of local football. Football administrators must take a proactive approach to ensure consistency and reliability in the scheduling of matches.

Am just saying, while fans are the lifeblood of the sport, it’s the responsibility of football administrators and clubs owners to manage this newfound enthusiasm intelligently.
