Local authority elections are the target for Joseph Kauandenge’s new political association, the Association for Localised Interest (ASOLI).

Kauandenge announced the formation of ASOLI on Tuesday.

The party plans to contest in the Windhoek local authority elections set for later this year.

The formation of ASOLI follows Kauandenge’s resignation last month from his position as Secretary General of the National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo).

Although he did not provide a reason for his decision, he communicated his resignation in a letter addressed to the Nudo president, Esther Muinjangue.

Kauandenge said ASOLI already has more than 4 000 registered members in the Windhoek district.

“We went through the process of registering the association as per the requirements of the Electoral Act, which is 1200 members that you must have, and we have submitted that which went through, and they have approved it,” he said.

He added that the Electoral Commission of Namibia has officially registered the association.

Kauandenge served as a Nudo Windhoek city councillor from 2015 to 2019.

He then served in the National Assembly from 2020 until he resigned from the party earlier this year.

He explained that the association’s logo shows two hands, one pulling the other.

“We have two hands, our slogan says let us pull each other up. It is our motto that let us pull each other out of poverty, let us pull each other out of whatever social ills we are finding ourselves in and that is why we took that motto that let us each other up from lack of basic services, let us do away with informal settlements and so on,” said Kauandenge.
