Maputo Port Development Company has announced its 2025 operational performance, reporting record volumes, expanded capacity and continued investment in Mozambique’s logistics system.
In 2025, the Port of Maputo handled a historic all-time high of 32.0 million tonnes, up 3.4% from 30.9 million tonnes the previous year. The company said the performance confirms the port’s role as a key regional logistics hub and reflects the strength of the integrated port and corridor system.
MPDC’s direct operations also reached a record level, with 15.2 million tonnes handled. This represents year-on-year growth of 6.4%, driven by ongoing investment in infrastructure, systems and skills, as well as improvements in operational efficiency.
Rail volumes increased by 17%, rising from 9.7 million tonnes in 2024 to 11.7 million tonnes in 2025. MPDC said rail remains central to the port’s sustainability strategy.
The company’s contribution to the Mozambican state also grew. Concession fees reached US$48.9 million, up from US$46.8 million the previous year. MPDC said the figure excludes additional government benefits through taxes and dividends paid to its partner company, CFM.
“These results reflect the collective effort of our teams and partners across the entire logistics chain. Achieving record volumes while continuing to invest in capacity, efficiency and social impact demonstrates the maturity and resilience of the Port of Maputo. Our focus remains on building a competitive, integrated and sustainable corridor that supports Mozambique’s long-term economic development,” said MPDC chief executive officer Osório Lucas.
During the year, the company also advanced key infrastructure projects. MPDC said the Kanyaka Island pier bridge is scheduled for completion in March 2026. The project is expected to improve access, mobility and logistics integration for the island community.
At the same time, MPDC continued its investment programme to expand capacity and strengthen the logistics system. This includes expanding the bulk terminal to 16 million tonnes, increasing container terminal capacity to 530 000 TEUs, upgrading Grindrod’s magnetite and coal terminal to 12 million tonnes, and improving efficiency along the logistics corridor.
“These investments are fully aligned with MPDC’s long-term strategy to position the Port of Maputo as a modern, competitive, and integrated logistics hub, supporting regional trade and the sustainable development of Mozambique,” Lucas said.
