More than N$9 million worth of drugs seized, 136 suspected arrested

The Namibian Police Force have this week arrested a 34-year-old man in possession of drugs worth almost N$6 million.

According to NamPol’s Spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi, the man was arrested on Monday in Windhoek, during an intelligence-led operation.

She said the police intercepted the man and arrested him after he was found in possession of 113, 470 kilograms grams of cannabis (skunk) with an estimated value of N$5,673,500

Shikwambi said the man appeared before the court on Monday and was remanded in custody until 9 November 2023 for the second appearance.

Similarly, the police on Monday further reported that illicit drugs of various types worth more than N$3 million were seized by the police during August 2023.

According to Shikwambi, illicit drugs seized by the police last month include Cannabis – 252, 135.32 kilograms – worth N$2 501 353.20, Mandrax – 747 tablets worth N$ 89, 640.00, Crack Cocaine – 110 units – worth N$11, 000.00, Cocaine Powder – 1, 887.63 grams worth N$943, 815.00, and TIK – 1 straw worth N4240.00.

The police estimated the total value of all the illicit drugs to be N$3, 546, 048.20.

Shikwambi said that 135 suspects were arrested.

Of that number, 129 are Namibians, two are Angolan nationals, one is Tanzanian, one is South African, one Sudanese and one Zimbabwean.

She emphasised that drug dealing is illegal in the country, adding that the Police continue to arrest drug dealers and mules who continue to smuggle illegal substances into the country, to destroy the nation.

She urged the Namibian people to come forward and work together with the police to report drugs and crime-related matters.
