Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has appointed Trophimus Hiwilepo as its new non-executive chairperson with effect from 13 February.
The appointment follows the passing of former chairperson Theofelus Mberirua, which the company announced on 25 November 2024.
In a notice to shareholders, MTC said the board appointed Hiwilepo in line with section 3.59 of the Namibia Securities Exchange Listings Requirements and Article 88 of the company’s Articles of Association. Hiwilepo has served as an independent non-executive director since July 2024.
The board said the appointment reflects its confidence in Hiwilepo’s leadership and business experience, as well as his commitment to Namibia’s digital transformation. It said he is positioned to guide the board and support the company’s strategy and growth in the interest of stakeholders.
The board thanked Mercia Geises, who served as acting chairperson recently, for her leadership during the transition period.
Shareholders were informed that further announcements will follow once the process to fill board vacancies has been completed. The board said it remains properly constituted under the company’s Articles of Association and continues to carry out its fiduciary duties.
Mberirua died in November last year. MTC said at the time that his leadership brought clarity, steadiness and vision to the company.
He served as managing director of Standard Bank Namibia and Standard Bank Holdings for more than six years. He also held directorships at Telecom Namibia, First National Bank, Trustco, the Namibian Institute of Pathology, Omnitel, Plastic Packaging, Liberty Life, Sanlam Unit Trust, the Namibian Ports Authority and Stanlib.
In 2020, he was appointed chief executive of Air Namibia and led the airline before it closed in 2021. He also served as chief executive of NamPost and Telecom Holdings.
