MTC launches eSIM for international travellers

Mobile Telecommunication Limited (MTC), on Tuesday launched the Electronic Subscriber Identity Module (eSIM) solution for its customers who travel internationally.

MTC is the first to bring an exciting innovative service to Namibia. For now, the MTC eSIM technology solution will only be available as a data-only service, offering data-centric connectivity enabling online browsing, WhatsApp and other Application calls, and any other data-driven usage to its outbound customers, for example, customers travelling outside the country.

MTC’s Acting Chief Commercial Officer Elton Katangolo explained that when people travel the world, without eSIM, they are required to buy a second physical SIM card upon arrival at their destination.

However, with eSIM they do not need to buy any card; and customers will be able to add an international data plan to their device upon arrival in the country of their destination.

He further elaborated that customers with eSIM-compatible devices can register, choose a plan, and activate their eSIM on the MTC web portal where they have various packages designed to suit different travel needs, and with easy top-ups available for continuous connectivity.

Katangolo expressed that Namibia has been due for an eSIM solution since 2021, stating that the only drawback was the COVID-19 pandemic.

“With this groundbreaking solution, our customers travelling outside the country can now enjoy seamless internet access, and the convenience and flexibility of staying connected without needing a new physical SIM card,” explains Katangolo.

Moreover, he said that with the MTC travel eSIM technology, travellers can enjoy predictable fixed-rate data for global destinations. No surprises.

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical. You can install eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time.
