The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) has set a target to build 2 000 houses across the country by April 2026, focusing on accelerating affordable housing delivery.

Speaking at the official handover of 30 housing units in Omuthiya on Tuesday, NHE board chairperson Toska Sem said the enterprise is committed to meeting the goal and has already started preparing.

“The comprehension that 2 000 houses must be constructed by April 2026 has fuelled our resolve to stand tall and be counted. The task is clear, and being the state organ responsible for housing, NHE is ready to deliver with special emphasis on the National Informal Settlement Upgrading Project,” she said.

Sem said NHE conducted a countrywide fact-finding mission in June to engage with local authorities and secure land for construction.

“To this end, the NHE management, last month, embarked on a countrywide fact-finding mission to almost all local authorities in the country to canvas for land to support the 2 000 target for the 2025–2026 financial year,” she said.

She said over 2 500 plots have been made available in towns including Swakopmund, Eenhana, Nkurenkuru, Rundu, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, and Katima Mulilo, which will be prioritised for construction.

Sem also highlighted the affordability of the housing units, with monthly repayments starting at N$400 for one-bedroom houses and up to N$1 200 for three-bedroom homes.

“This is the impact that we have been yearning for as a country where low-income earners are offered opportunities to own formal structures in urban centres, thereby uplifting their economic positions,” she said.

NHE is implementing a five-year integrated strategic business plan from 2025/26 to 2028/29, focused on business growth, operational efficiency, and customer service.

Sem called on all stakeholders to support the organisation’s efforts.

“We reiterate our readiness to engage beyond the parameters of the National Informal Settlement Upgrading Project so that we continue to deliver affordable housing to all clusters of our society,” she said.
