The Nissan X-TRAIL is celebrating 25 years since its launch, marking a milestone for one of the world’s most popular SUVs.
Introduced in 2000, the first-generation X-TRAIL (T30: 2000–2007) pioneered a new motoring category.
It combined comfort, performance, and practicality in a 4WD vehicle, breaking the perception that such cars were heavy on fuel.
The T30 featured a spacious interior designed for outdoor and sports use, a large cargo area, washable luggage boards, and water-repellent seats.
In 2003, a model update improved driver comfort with a pop-up steering wheel that tilted up to 45 degrees. The “Hyper Roof Rail” added driving lights and roof bars for better visibility and confidence during night travel.
It also introduced Nissan’s ALL MODE 4×4 system, which adjusted torque distribution to the rear wheels based on driving conditions. The system provided stable performance on slippery roads and allowed drivers to switch between AUTO, 2WD, and LOCK modes.
The second generation (T31: 2007–2013) strengthened the X-TRAIL’s image as a tough and versatile SUV. It featured the ALL MODE 4×4-i system with Yaw Movement Control, which analysed steering and movement data to improve cornering and stability. Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist were added to enhance safety and ease on steep terrain.
The third generation (T32: 2013–2020) introduced new driver assistance features such as Active Ride Control, Active Engine Brake, and Cornering Stability Assist. It also included the Intelligent Around View Monitor, which helped drivers with parking and manoeuvring.
The current fourth generation (T33) brought even further refinements. It offers a seven-seat option, a Head-Up Display, increased towing capacity of up to 2 000 kg, and the ProPILOT feature, which reduces driver stress on highways by supporting steering, braking, and acceleration.
The X-TRAIL’s durability was highlighted in 2023 when it served as a support vehicle for Daring Africa, an 8 000 km journey from Pretoria to Cairo, alongside the Nissan Navara pick-ups.
In 2025, Nissan updated the X-TRAIL with a walk-away lock, an approach unlock system, and wireless charging for all models.
Since its debut, the X-TRAIL has sold more than 8.1 million units globally and about 50 000 in South Africa. It remains one of Nissan’s most enduring and influential vehicles in the global SUV market.
