The Hope Farm Project will expand to other regions after completing its first year in the Erongo Region.

The project, launched on 26 July 2025, is a partnership between the Swakop Uranium Foundation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, the Erongo Regional Council and local cooperatives.

It started with the donation of 630 goats and sheep to 30 beneficiaries.

By January 2026, the project had placed 1 008 animals with cooperatives, with the total herd growing to 1 248 animals.

Officials said the growth reflects the work of participating farmers and the use of a revolving model, where beneficiaries return part of their livestock to support new participants.

Agriculture minister Inge Zaamwani said the results show community effort.

“When I see these results, I see more than numbers. I see resilience. I see determination. I see communities taking ownership of their development.”

She said the revolving model supports long-term participation.

“This model is particularly meaningful. By returning a portion of livestock after the agreed period to support new beneficiaries, you are not only receiving assistance; you are becoming partners in empowerment. Your success is Namibia’s success.”

Swakop Uranium chief executive officer Luo Wei said the project shows the value of partnerships.

“This partnership between Swakop Uranium, the ministry, and local communities exemplifies how public and private sectors can unite for a common purpose, empowering individuals, strengthening economies, and lifting entire communities out of poverty. It’s a model for sustainable development.”

Swakop Uranium Foundation chairperson Percy McCallum said the project reflects shared effort.

“Today, we are not only celebrating livestock distribution; we are celebrating hope, responsibility, and progress.”

“Together, we are building stronger households, stronger cooperatives, and a more resilient Namibia.”

The project forms part of national plans to support agriculture and rural development, with a focus on women, youth and disadvantaged households.

The expansion planned for 2026 will build on the model used in Erongo to support more communities across the country.
