The Namibian Police Force (Nampol) in the Erongo region has launched the 2025/2026 festive season roadblock at the Swakopmund checkpoint.
The operation runs from 9 December 2025 to 16 January 2026 under the theme “Do the Right Thing and Save Lives.”
The launch outlined the policing strategies for the busy holiday period.
Erongo police regional commander, commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, said the roadblocks mark the start of intensified efforts to protect all roads as the region prepares for heavy travel.
“This launch marks the beginning of intensive efforts to safeguard all roads as the region prepares to receive thousands of visitors from across the country and beyond,” Kupembona said.
Swakopmund’s new mayor, Suamma Kautondokwa, welcomed the initiative and stressed community involvement.
“As the new mayor, one of my key priorities is to build on the strong partnerships that already exist to safeguard lives and promote public confidence,” she said.
She urged personal responsibility, saying the message was clear: every choice made on the road carries consequences, and committing to responsible driving helps protect families, communities and individuals.
Erongo governor Natalia /Goagoses delivered the keynote address and said the roadblocks are a vital tool for saving lives. She warned against speeds, fatigue and driving under the influence.
Mupenzeni Ntelamo, chief regional officer and chairperson of the Erongo Region Road Safety Forum, closed the event with a call for shared responsibility.
He said road safety is not only the responsibility of the police but a shared commitment required from every driver, passenger and pedestrian.
“Let us do the right thing: buckle up, avoid speeding, do not drink and drive, and stay alert.”
