The Opuwo Youth Choir is representing Namibia at the African Asia Pacific Choir Games and Grand Prix of Nations.
The choir games began in Mauritius on 27 September and will conclude this weekend.
The directorate of arts under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC) supported the choir’s participation as part of its mission to uplift Namibian artists, particularly the youth, by creating opportunities to showcase their talent on international platforms.
Founded in 2015 by music director Mbaseua Tjongarero, the Opuwo Youth Choir unites young singers from the Kunene Region, many of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Since its establishment, the choir has performed in Namibia, Botswana, and Zambia, blending traditional music with youthful energy and serving as a cultural ambassador for the country.
In a statement, the choir expressed gratitude for the support that made their participation in the competition possible.
“The support from the directorate gives us the chance to focus on what we do best, which is to share Namibia’s cultural richness with the world,” they said.
The directorate of arts said the sponsorship reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the role of arts and culture in promoting exchange and creativity, while also empowering young Namibians.
By enabling the Opuwo Youth Choir to perform at an international event, the directorate hopes to raise Namibia’s cultural profile globally and inspire communities locally.
The African Asia Pacific Choir Games and Grand Prix of Nations bring together choirs from across the world in a celebration of musical excellence, cultural diversity and artistic collaboration.
