The deputy director of education, arts, and culture in the Oshikoto Region, Tomas Kalimbo, has advised parents and guardians to keep their children safe during the festive season.

Kalimbo listed various ways to do so in a statement issued on 22 November.

Kalimbo said he wants a safe and secure environment for children this festive season.

He encouraged parents and guardians to know where their children are visiting during the festive season.

“Ensure that you leave your children with responsible and reliable persons,” he said.

In addition, Kalimbo advised parents to know their children’s friends and their parents.

“Ensure that you know the contact details of your children’s friends and their parents,” he said.

He also urged parents and guardians to avoid leaving their children at home this festive season.

“Consider child care centres, if need be. Do not leave your children alone at home,” he said.

Kalimbo wants parents and guardians to consider their children’s cyber safety during this festive season.

“Manage your children’s TV and social media time. Ensure cyber safety for your children,” he said.

Social worker Meameno Mungungu commented on the importance of child safety during the festive season.

“During the festive season, it is important that the children’s well-being is taken as a priority. The people who are caring for children should make proper arrangements, especially when they are going to a party,” she said.

Mungungu discouraged parents from leaving children under the care of other children.

“During the festive season, some parents and guardians tend to leave children under the care of other children, which leads to dangers such as sexual abuse. It is important that small children are left in proper care,” she said.
