Inflationary pressures for South Africa are forecast to ease further, ending this year at 4,4% and averaging 4,9% for this year. The Nedbank Group Economic Unit expects monetary policy easing to begin in September with a cumulative 50 basis points reduction in interest rates in the second half of the year, taking the prime lending rate down to 11,25% by the end of this year, followed by cuts of a further 75 basis points next year. The slowdown in the annual inflation rate emanated mainly from the slow increases registered in the price levels of ‘food and non-alcoholic beverages’ (from 10.4% to 4.8%); education (from 4.5% to 0.6%); and ‘miscellaneous goods and services’ (from 4.4% to 1.6%).
