PDM claims that Swapo hijacked Independence Day

The Secretary for Information and Publicity and Member of Parliament of the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), Hidipo Hamata, said the ruling party, has for years been hijacking Independence Day which is supposed to be a national day for all Namibians regardless of their political affiliation.

Hamata stated that the Swapo Party does this every year for their political gain which betrays the spirit of inclusivity and national unity that Independence Day represents.

“Independence Day is a cherished occasion for all Namibians to come together in unity and celebration of our nationhood.

“It is a time when people from all walks of life gather to commemorate the birth of our nation, not as members of any particular political party, but as proud citizens of Namibia, united in love and solidarity,” Hamata said.

According to the politician, his assertions are grounded on the Ndilimani songs played at the Independence Day event, where Swapo leaders began singing and dancing, raising their fists in the air as a signature of their party during the Independence Day commemoration that took place in Katima Mulio last week.

“They were chanting ‘Long live Swapo, long live’ and ‘viva Swapo’. I know you heard and saw them,” he said.

To Hamata, political leaders attending Independence Day celebrations do so in the spirit of unity and solidarity, driven by their love for the country and its people.

“It is disappointing and immature for the current government to exploit this momentous day for political gain. This practice must cease immediately and be consigned to history. Taxpayer money should not be squandered under the guise of organising Independence Day events that serve as mere political rallies,” he stated.

Urging the ruling party’s government to respect the sanctity of the day and refrain from using it as a platform for their political campaigns.

“They must stop playing Ndilimani songs and rather play unifying music befitting Independence Day celebrations. Our people deserve a celebration of independence that embodies dignity, respect, and freedom from want.

“As we reflect on our journey as a nation, let us commit to addressing the root causes of poverty and inequality, ensuring that every Namibian can truly taste the fruits of independence,” said Hamata.

“We cannot overlook the irony of a Namibia where people are reduced to running after food, accompanied by the haunting melodies of Ndilimani songs,” he added.

Hamata argued that instead of playing Party songs on Independence Day, people should celebrate achievements as a nation and rededicate themselves to building a brighter future for all Namibians.

“Let us celebrate our independence by harnessing our natural resources to improve the lives of all citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he expressed.

At the same time, Hamata took issue with President Nangolo Mbumba, stating that his speech at the Independence celebration event was disappointing.

“We cannot ignore the disappointing nature of the President’s speech, which fell short of instilling hope for the future of Namibian children. His remarks lacked the vision and inspiration needed to uplift our youth and guide them towards a brighter tomorrow,” a concerned Hamata said.

Political Analyst Ndumba Kamwanyah said Independence Day is a national and state event that should be celebrated by all people from all walks of life across the country regardless of the political parties they belong to.

He backed the PDM by saying the official opposition party is right to condemn the playing of political songs at national events.

“This is why we say people should not wear their political attire at national events. The same goes for party songs. The event is supposed to bring all people together as Namibians,” Kamwanyah commented.

“This has been done so many times, but it is not right,” he added.

Neither the Swapo Secretary-General, Sophia Shaningwa nor the party’s National Spokesperson, Hilma Nicanor a answered calls or responded to questions regarding the party’s position on the matter.
