Poultry import restrictions lifted

The Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia (LLPBN) has repealed restrictions on poultry imports and introduced a new scheme to support local producers.

The board confirmed that the government notice No. 54 of 28 February 2020 has been repealed following the issuance of a government notice on 1 April by the Ministry of International Relations and Trade.

The earlier regulation was issued under the Import and Export Act of 1994.

LLPBN acting chief executive officer Goliath Tjijendapi announced the changes in a public notice.

At the same time, the board introduced the Poultry Market Share Promotion Scheme as a permit condition aimed at supporting growth in the local poultry sector.

Under the new system, poultry imports will be controlled through quotas and import permits issued by the board.

All importers must register with LLPBN, obtain a producer number and apply for permits based on allocated quotas and procedures.

The board said existing requirements remain in place. Importers must comply with veterinary permits, animal health standards, quality control rules and payment of levies.

Local producers who want to take part in the scheme must register and meet all veterinary requirements for poultry production.

The LLPBN said the scheme is intended to strengthen local participation in the poultry market.

Namibia’s poultry consumption is estimated at about 30 000 tonnes and is expected to reach 38 500 tonnes by 2029.

The poultry industry was valued at N$1.74 billion in 2024, up 13.47% from the previous year.
