Premium cuts drive beef price increases in June

Consumers in the Khomas Region paid more for beef fillet in June compared to May, as beef prices climbed across several regions of the country.

According to the latest figures from the Livestock and Livestock Products Board of Namibia, the price of fillet in Khomas rose from N$315.98/kg in May to N$378.25/kg in June.

This was a 6.93% weekly increase, the board said.

Other prime cuts also saw increases. Topside climbed 3.66% to N$187.94/kg, neck rose 6.48% to N$99.99/kg, and shin increased by 5% to N$106.51/kg. At the same time, the price of thin flank dropped by 5.41% to N$114.23/kg, while fat declined by 7.5%.

Meanwhile, Kavango East recorded the most dramatic price movements. Neck rose by 17.5% to N$102.17/kg, the sharpest increase nationwide.

Flat rib surged by 8.33% to N$113.00/kg, while topside and fillet grew by 5.67% and 5.07%, respectively.

However, the region also saw steep drops, with silverside plunging by 18.77% to N$126.08/kg and fat falling by 24.48%.

In Oshana, premium cuts followed the national trend.

Topside jumped 13.33% to N$147.82/kg, fillet rose 10.73% to N$355.06/kg, and loin gained 8.52%. Prices for shin, thin flank, and aitchbone declined slightly, with aitchbone dropping by 7.04%.

Despite the weekly increases, the average fillet price in Oshana fell to N$329.75 in June from N$368.40 in May, suggesting softer demand overall.

Zambezi saw consistent gains across most beef categories. Fat increased by 11.5%, bones by 6.19%, and flat rib, brisket, and bolo recorded marginal increases.

Aitchbone and wing rib remained relatively stable. Higher monthly averages for shin and bolo indicate a steady rise in consumer demand in the region.
