Reconnaissance Energy Africa Ltd (ReconAfrica) has announced that it is preparing to spud its Kavango West 1X exploration well in Namibia before the end of July.

The company also confirmed that board member Iman Hill will resign effective 31 July.

In a corporate update, ReconAfrica said the drilling rig has been safely mobilised at the site. All required permits have been obtained from regulatory authorities. Final rig assembly and safety checks are currently in progress.

The Kavango West 1X well is expected to reach a total depth of about 3,800 meters.

It targets more than 1,500 meters of the Otavi carbonate reservoir, which is the main focus within the Damara Fold Belt play.

This will be the second well to test the Damara Fold Belt, a geologic feature identified on 2D seismic data. The structure stretches over 22 kilometres in length and 3 kilometres in width. ReconAfrica has identified over 19 prospects and leads across this trend. It has also expanded its exploration footprint by 5 million acres through a Memorandum of Understanding in Angola.

“Everyone at the company has worked diligently to get drill-ready on the Kavango West 1X prospect and we are excited to spud the well in the coming days,” said Brian Reinsborough, president and CEO of ReconAfrica.

“We recognise the importance of this play-opening well for our shareholders, the local communities in which we operate, and the broader energy industry in Namibia.”

ReconAfrica also announced that director Iman Hill will step down from the board at the end of July due to foreign work obligations. Hill joined the board in August 2023.

Her departure will leave the board with five members, including three independent directors.

“We thank Iman for her work and guidance over the past two years and wish her well in her future endeavours,” said Diana McQueen, chair of the board. “We also express our gratitude to the community and regulatory stakeholders in Namibia for helping bring the Kavango West 1X well to drill-ready status.”

ReconAfrica is a Canadian oil and gas exploration company with petroleum licenses covering around 13 million contiguous acres across northeastern Namibia, southeastern Angola, and northwestern Botswana. The company says it prioritises environmentally responsible operations and community engagement in the Kalahari Desert.
