Bornfree Fishing and RND Holdings have sponsored the 2025 Swakopmund Mayoral Cup with N$30 000.
The sponsorship, which includes funding and trophies, was announced at the official launch of the tournament on 29 August in Swakopmund.
This year’s Mayoral Cup will see 34 teams compete in soccer and netball. Prizes include cash and trophies for top performers, such as the fair play team (N$2 000) and the player, coach, goalkeeper, top scorer, referee, and assistant referee of the tournament (each N$1 000).
The two companies also donated a soccer kit to the Swakopmund Municipality staff team, which will represent the town at the Southern Africa Municipality Games in Lesotho in September.
Founder of Bornfree Fishing, Regto David, said supporting the event matches the sponsors’ focus on youth development and community upliftment.
“The Mayoral Cup is more than just a football tournament, it’s a stage where young people can discover their potential, stay engaged in positive activities, and strengthen community pride. We are proud to stand behind this initiative and to contribute to shaping the future of our youth. Personally, I would like to see more Deon Hottos come out of this community,” he said.
Swakopmund deputy mayor, Suamma Kautondokwa, highlighted the event’s importance.
“The Mayoral Cup is a flagship event that has steadily grown in stature and significance, providing a platform for youth empowerment and the reinforcement of our shared values. Events such as this foster unity, resilience, and inclusive development, while creating safe spaces for young people to engage constructively, develop teamwork, and showcase their talents,” she said.
RND Holdings public relations manager, Desiree Gases, said the contribution aims to inspire more companies to invest in sport.
“RND Holdings, together with Bornfree Fishing, has pledged N$30 000 towards the 2025 Mayoral Cup, reinforcing our commitment to youth empowerment through sport. This contribution includes funding as well as the donation of trophies for the tournament,” she said.
The tournament, hosted under the Swakopmund Municipality, will run for several weeks.
Organisers expect large crowds and said the sponsorship will help ensure the smooth running of the competition and proper recognition of participating teams.
RND Holdings and Bornfree Fishing have previously supported community sports events, including the Swakopmund Beach Soccer Tournament, boxing, netball, and other youth programmes.
