Travel insurance essential for safe and stress-free trips

Travel insurance has become a key part of trip planning, whether for a family holiday, a business journey or a short getaway. From medical emergencies to lost luggage and trip cancellations, experts say the right cover can prevent serious financial strain.

Franco Feris, chief executive officer at Santam Namibia Limited, said travellers need to understand what their policies actually cover.

“Travel insurance isn’t just paperwork for visa applications. It’s a legal contract between you and your insurer, designed to protect you when things don’t go according to plan,” he said.

The level of cover depends on the trip. Short city breaks may only need basic medical and baggage protection.

Family holidays often benefit from policies that include children at no extra cost. Adventure travellers should confirm that activities such as diving or skiing are covered.

Business travellers, especially those in construction, mining or engineering, should check that emergency medical cover applies to work-related activities.

Feris said many travellers assume all policies are the same.

“One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is assuming all policies are the same. Tailoring your cover to your trip type and itinerary is critical to ensuring you’re fully protected.”

Medical emergencies abroad can be costly. Policies that offer 24-hour global emergency assistance and strong medical benefits, including hospitalisation, are advised.

Other benefits, such as repatriation of mortal remains, emergency family visits and cover for children when a parent is hospitalised, can provide support during difficult moments.

Trip cancellations and delays are common. Without insurance, prepaid flights and accommodation may be lost.

A comprehensive policy usually covers cancellations from the date of purchase and disruptions caused by illness, bad weather or strikes.

“Delays are frustrating, but with the right cover, they don’t have to ruin your trip,” Feris said.

He noted that some policies, including those from Santam Travel Insurance, cover meals, accommodation or lounge access for delays longer than four hours and missed connections.

All travel insurance policies have exclusions unless extra cover is added.

These may include travel to conflict areas, undeclared high-risk sports, pre-existing medical conditions, injuries linked to reckless behaviour, travel against medical advice, pregnancy after 26 weeks and mental health conditions. Feris advised travellers to discuss any special risks with their insurer before leaving.

Travellers should review policy wording, benefit limits, excess amounts and claims procedures.

Accurate disclosure of medical conditions, valid travel documents and confirmation that planned activities are covered are important.

“Travel insurance works on mutual responsibility,” Feris said. “The insurer is obligated to pay valid claims, and the policyholder must provide accurate information and follow the policy terms. The clearer both sides are, the smoother the claims process will be.”

A suitable travel insurance plan can turn serious problems into manageable setbacks. Many insurers offer flexible cover for business travel, holidays and extended stays, with optional add-ons such as car rental excess cover, unrest or terrorism protection and personal liability insurance.

“Travel insurance should be simple enough to compare, customise and buy online,” Feris said.

“A good insurer removes uncertainty, so travellers know exactly where they stand, no fine-print surprises, just comprehensive protection for a stress-free trip.”
