The Usakos Town Council has allocated N$8 million for the upgrading of two sports facilities.

The projects form part of the national sport facilities development plan, which aims to ensure that all 14 regions and 121 constituencies have standard facilities for sport development.

According to the council, the projects are being carried out in consultation with the ministry of education, innovation, youth, sports, arts and culture.

“After an interactive and impactful meeting with the ministry, we are especially proud to announce that the Usakos Sports Field will be upgraded at an estimated cost of N$8 million,” the council said.

The upgrades will include  the Usakos sports field and the Uis sports stadium.

Both facilities host various sports, including football, rugby, netball and athletics.

“This investment marks a milestone for Usakos, strengthening sports, empowering youth, and uplifting community pride. Together, we are building a future where opportunity, talent, and unity thrive,” the council said.

In a separate development, the Keetmanshoop Municipality announced upgrades to the Westdene sports stadium. The facility was closed to the public and will reopen on 31 January 2026.

Public relations officer Monica Imene said the grass at the stadium is worn out and will be replaced, along with other upgrades.

She said the total cost of the project is not yet available but stressed the importance of the stadium for sports development in the town.

The stadium accommodates rugby, football, athletics, netball, basketball and other sports.
