Welwitchia University capped 1 500 graduates during its eighth graduation ceremony on Friday at the Mercure Hotel in Windhoek.
Welwitchia University chancellor and co-founder Scholastika Iipinge said the ceremony reflected the university’s growth and its role in developing Namibia’s workforce.
“It is with immense pride and profound joy that we celebrate the achievements of 1 500 graduates. Your training has equipped you to drive purposeful and sustainable transformation in your fields and communities,” she said.
The 2025 cohort included students from the faculty of health sciences and the faculty of law, commerce and education, as well as the university’s first postgraduate graduates. Iipinge highlighted the first Nursing Science and Midwifery Honours cohorts from the Katima Mulilo and Walvis Bay campuses.
She said this group showed the university’s commitment to expanding access to quality education across the country.
According to Iipinge, the health sector continues to give the university positive feedback.
She noted an example from a partner hospital where fourth-year nursing students performed lifesaving CPR during clinical placements.
“This reinforces that our training prepares students for real-world challenges with competence and confidence,” she said.
The ceremony was attended by prime minister Elijah Ngurare and marked one of the institution’s biggest milestones since attaining full university status in 2024.
Ngurare congratulated the graduates and said their achievements were both personal and national.
“Education, properly harnessed, is one of the most powerful engines of change. It shapes not only intellect but also character,” he said.
Ngurare called on the graduates to uphold ethical leadership, commit to lifelong learning and support national development.
“You are entrusted with the responsibility of contributing to Namibia’s transformation,” he said.
He urged them to “remain curious, stay adaptable, and let your contributions be rooted in integrity and service.”
He said nursing graduates will support stronger healthcare delivery, whereas those in education, commerce, and project management will help improve public service delivery and drive development.
Welwitchia University, formerly Welwitchia Health Training Centre, was established in 2013 as a private institution focused on health sciences.
