Wesco gears towards being a key player in Namibia’s Green economy

WESCO GROUP Namibia exhibits the notion that a green economy is not only environmentally friendly, but also is also an economy that generates jobs, alleviates poverty, and creates wealth for the country.

Under the umbrella of our Wesco Waste Management entity, we assert our Green Corporal Social Responsibility (CSR) by actively reducing or eliminating the negative impact that waste products have on the environment. At the same time, our highly skilled workforce demonstrates how the private sector can reduce pressures on the public wage bill through training and creation of employment opportunities.

Wesco Waste Management is versatile and applies scientific methods that on the one hand prevent but also on the other hand, manage waste materials efficiently. Through our advanced waste management systems, we assist in the recovery of valuable resources, which can be reused to create new products and reduce the need for virgin materials. Additionally, our proper waste disposal methods can prevent harmful substances from entering the environment, thus reducing the negative impact on ecosystems and human health. Overall, Wesco Waste Management plays a crucial role in promoting a more sustainable and environmentally conscious economy.

Being an accredited waste oil recycler approved by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in terms of the Used Mineral Oil Regulations, Wesco Waste Management is substantially in the oil recycling business. We have a strong focus on the management of oil related waste (collection, disposal and recycling). Used oil, in particular is lethal for the environment as it is insoluble, persistent, and can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals. In addition, it is slow to degrade and it sticks to everything from sand to bird feathers. Furthermore, it’s a major source of oil contamination of waterways and can result in pollution of drinking water sources. Additionally, used oil interferes with the processes that take place at a wastewater treatment facility and can cause operational breakdowns.

The National Waste Management Strategy for Namibia states that a major shortfall and constraint to improving waste management in Namibia at present is the lack of a coordinated approach between stakeholders and lack of national strategy. WESCO Waste Management addresses this issue with our highly trained oil collectors collecting hazardous used oil from all over Namibia from our branches in Walvis Bay, Windhoek, Lüderitz, Oranjemund as well as collection tanks in Tsumeb, Oshakati and Ondangwa. This gets transported to our two oil processing plants in Walvis Bay and Windhoek (Brakwater) for recycling purposes.

Additionally, in Windhoek, in particular, Wesco Waste Management has partnered with the Municipality to tackle the issue of oil spillages by backyard mechanics. In cooperation with the Department of Economic Development and Community Services at the city of Windhoek, WESCO has placed several tanks for oil collection at strategic places all over Windhoek.

Other services include tank cleaning and general oil/ spillage cleaning, waste segregation, tanker escort services, asbestos removal, demolition works and fuel storage.

Wesco Waste Management, being an accredited waste collector, issues waste disposal certificates that are certified by the Ministry of Environment and tourism and which clients then keep for auditing purposes.

As an organization, we believe that through prioritizing the health of our environment, we can create jobs, improve public health, and reduce our carbon footprint. We encourage policymakers and businesses to prioritize sustainability and work towards a more equitable and sustainable future for all. Environmental awareness and related issues are the order of the day and we, as Wesco Group, want to be part of the solution as far as we can with your assistance and partnership.
