YOUNG OBSERVER | Namib Mills joins MTC to train youth in baking

Young people in the ǁKaras region will begin skills training in April under the MTC4Life 2026 programme, aimed at helping them start small businesses and earn an income.

The programme will support 30 young people aged 18 to 35 with training in trades such as baking, hairdressing, barbering, leatherwork, sewing and cell phone repair.

This week, Namib Mills has partnered with MTC to support the baking trade.

Namib Mills will contribute N$5 000 per trainee, either in cash or equipment, and will also provide a baking expert, equipment and ingredients for training.

Participants will attend training sessions over seven days. Each trade will have at least five trainees.

Each participant will receive a starter toolkit and a N$5 000 seed grant from MTC to help launch or grow a small business.

MTC’s chief brand, marketing, communications and sustainability officer, Tim Ekandjo, said the programme focuses on practical skills.

“MTC4Life is about giving young Namibians practical skills, confidence, and a real opportunity to earn a living. By pairing hands-on training with starter support, we are enabling the youth to move from unemployment to self-reliance and active economic participation,” he said.

The programme targets unemployed and self-employed youth and aims to help them build income-generating businesses.

MTC said it is working to bring in more partners to support other trades and expand the programme in the region.
