The regional and local authority elections are just around the corner. The Windhoek Observer reached out to young people to hear their views on the elections and the issues that will shape their vote.
As you head into this election, which issue will shape your vote the most and why is it important to you?

The issue that will shape my vote the most is local development and accountability. Growing up in Otavi, I have seen how poor roads and a lack of basic services hold people back. I want leaders who genuinely serve their communities and turn promises into real change.

As an unemployed young person, an issue that will shape my vote most is youth unemployment. Too many young people are struggling to find stable, good-paying jobs even after investing years in education and training. This matters to me because it affects our generation’s ability to be independent, start families, and contribute to the economy. I want to support leaders who will invest in job creation, skills training, and entrepreneurship programs so young people have real opportunities to build a secure future. My vote will be influenced by grassroot leaders who are intentional and relentless in the fight against youth unemployment in our country.

As I head into this election, the issue that will shape my vote the most is accountable and community-centered leadership. I care about this because the decisions made at the local and regional level affect my daily life, from the safety of my community, to the quality of basic services, to the opportunities available for young people. I want leaders who don’t just campaign during election season, but who show up for their communities, listen honestly, and work consistently. For me, this vote is about choosing leaders who prioritise people, not politics.
