Swakop Uranium has donated more than 1 000 goats and sheep valued at N$3 million to farming cooperatives in the Erongo Region. The donation is part of its Hope Farm Project, which aims to create sustainable livelihoods for women and youth.

The announcement was made during the launch of the company’s 2024 Sustainability Report on Tuesday, where government leaders and industry representatives shared a collective vision for mining as a driver of national development.

Erongo governor Natalia |Goagoses said the event reflected strong collaboration between government, industry, and communities.

She praised Swakop Uranium’s continued investment in social development and its commitment to responsible mining.

“In Erongo, we have witnessed the impact of Swakop Uranium’s investment in schools, communities, and local enterprises,” |Goagoses said.

She added that Swakop Uranium continues to demonstrate that mining, when driven by integrity and innovation, can successfully coexist with environmental protection and social development.

The deputy minister of mines and energy Gaudentia Kröhne delivered the keynote address, describing sustainability as the cornerstone of Namibia’s mining future.

Kröhne said the country’s uranium remains a key resource for the global clean energy transition.

“Responsible mining is no longer an aspiration; it is the standard we expect and the foundation upon which Namibia’s reputation is built,” she said.

Swakop Uranium’s leadership presented the company’s sixth sustainability report, themed “Mining for a Sustainable Future”.

The report highlighted record performance in production and safety, supported by technological advances such as digital monitoring systems and AI-powered safety tools.

Li Li, board director of the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN), Swakop Uranium’s parent company, described the Husab Mine as a world-class green mine and a symbol of China-Namibia cooperation.

She shared success stories from the company’s Academic Empowerment Scholarship Programme, which has supported over 20 university students.

“One of them, Josefine, from a remote northern village, became the first university graduate and the first engineer in her family, now working proudly at the Husab Mine,” Li said.
