For 29-year-old Thusnelde Oases from the Hai//om San community, life has been a struggle marked by poverty and limited opportunities.

Growing up as the second last born in a family of eight in Grootfontein, she often saw her parents depend on their pensions to support the household.

“With my parents relying on their pensions and limited job opportunities, it was tough to get ahead,” she said. “But everything changed when I was given the chance to pursue my education through the Palms For Life Fund.”

That opportunity became a turning point in her life. Through the fund, Thusnelde studied office administration and developed a strong business mindset that prepared her to face new challenges.

“When I was given the chance to study through the Palms For Life Fund, I saw a glimmer of hope. I seized the opportunity, worked hard, and gained valuable skills. Now, I am determined to make the most of every opportunity and create a brighter future for myself and those around me,” she said.

Her journey was not easy.

“One of the biggest challenges I faced was overcoming the limitations of growing up in a financially struggling family. With limited job opportunities and my parents relying on their pensions, I felt stuck,” she said.

Today, Thusnelde stands as an example for many young people from marginalised communities.

She continues to encourage others facing similar challenges to keep working toward their goals. “With determination and the right support, we can overcome obstacles and build a brighter future,” she said.

Thusnelde is one of 1 300 marginalised youth supported by Palms for Life to receive training through the Community Skills Development Foundation (COSDEF).

The initiative equips young Namibians with practical skills to improve their employability, especially in the growing tourism and hospitality sectors.

Through such programmes, Palms for Life continues to open opportunities for young Namibians like Thusnelde, empowering them to build self-reliance and contribute to their communities.
