In a thrilling and historic moment for Namibian football, the Brave Warriors secured their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory by stunning Tunisia in a spectacular 89th-minute header from Deon Hotto.

The exhilarating match took place last night at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium in Korhogo, Ivory Coast, during the opening fixture of Group E, and it has sent waves of celebration throughout Namibia and beyond.

Namibia’s triumph continued a trend of upsets during the early stages of the latest AFCON tournament, with Cape Verde claiming a last-gasp victory over Ghana and Egypt needing a late penalty to avoid a shocking loss to Mozambique.

The larger footballing nations also faced unexpected challenges, as Nigeria was held to a draw by Equatorial Guinea, and Algeria had a similar fate against Angola.

Orlando Pirates star, Hotto, emerged as the hero of the evening for Namibia. His 89th-minute header from close range secured the historic win, and although he netted a second goal in stoppage time, it was rightfully ruled out for offside.

Hotto’s performance proved to be a thorn in Tunisia’s side throughout the match, as he worked in tandem with Namibia’s captain and record scorer, Peter Shalulile.

Namibia’s goalkeeper, Lloyd Kazapua, also played a crucial role in the victory, making a string of five saves that kept Tunisia at bay and contributed to the Eagles of Carthage’s shocking opening defeat.

This unexpected result leaves Tunisia with a significant challenge ahead, as they share Group E with Mali and the returning South Africa.

Namibia’s journey at the AFCON tournament is historic and filled with determination. Having consistently finished at the bottom of their groups in their previous three campaigns, the Brave Warriors are now on a mission to rewrite their story.

In a recent press conference, Namibia’s coach, Collin Benjamin, and Vice-Captain Ananias Gebhardt displayed a fearless warrior spirit and unwavering determination.

Drawn into a challenging Group E, Namibia finds itself competing against formidable opponents, including South Africa and Mali. The battle for a spot in the knockout phase promises to be intense, with Namibia eager to make a lasting impact on the continental stage.

With renewed purpose and a dedication to making history, the Brave Warriors are gearing up for their upcoming match against Tunisia, aiming for a breakthrough in the tournament’s history.

Namibia’s AFCON victory has already sparked celebrations and optimism among the nation’s football fans.

The Brave Warriors’ journey continues, and the world eagerly awaits to see if they can carry their newfound momentum forward in pursuit of their AFCON dreams.
