In an ambitious move towards fostering diversity and inclusivity, the Namibian Police is set to overhaul its recruitment process.

The Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo said the initiative will be aimed at reflecting the nation’s diverse demographic fabric within the law enforcement ranks and that it marks a significant step forward in the police force’s commitment to equality and representation.

General Shikongo, speaking at a promotion ceremony at the National Police Headquarters in Windhoek, stressed the essence of this transformative agenda.

“Our goal is to ensure that the composition of the police force mirrors the rich diversity of Namibia’s population,” he said.

He emphasized that achieving a balance of inclusivity and equal representation in law enforcement is fundamental to fostering unity, understanding, and the embodiment of shared national values.

The drive to revolutionize recruitment practices within the police force is conceived as a direct response to historical imbalances, aiming to establish a more equitable platform for all Namibians.

He said that by incorporating a wide array of perspectives and backgrounds, the police force intends to enhance its connection and trust with the communities it serves.

He added that cadet constables currently in training echoed this sentiment. They reiterated the positive impact of inclusivity on trust-building between law enforcement and community members.

In an inspiring testament to the force’s evolving inclusive culture, members with albinism shared their experiences, noting that their integration into the police service has been smooth and encouraging.

Their stories serve as a call to action for individuals from all walks of life to consider a career in law enforcement, reinforcing the message that diversity strengthens the police force’s ability to serve and protect the community effectively.

The upcoming graduation of more than 1,000 cadet constables next month, ready to be deployed across the nation, symbolizes a new era for the Namibian Police Force.

General Shikongo also announced the promotion of the Head of the Namibian Police Force Traffic Law Enforcement Directorate to the rank of commissioner, effective from 1 April 2024.

This promotion, among others conferred during the event, reflects the ongoing commitment to professional growth and leadership development within the force.

The initiative towards a more inclusive and representative law enforcement body promises to reshape the face of policing in Namibia.
