Taxi fare increase set for Wednesday

Maria Hamutenya Taxi fares will increase from N$12 to N$ 13.20 as of 31 March, Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) leader, Werner Januarie, announced on Monday. According to Januarie, the increment is in line with the law, section 12 of the Road Transportation Act of 1977, which states that when there is any fuel increment, unions are allowed to give notice for taxi fare increment. “It is only in subsequent section where board’s approval is sought and only in instances where the increase requested is above the threshold of ten percent, thus the NTTU pricelist is now finalised and…

Transport permit corruption irks operators

Maria Hamutenya Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) has accused the Ministry of Works and Transport of allowing the festering of rampant corruption in the issuance of transport permits. The taxi body has alleged the demand of kickbacks by officials issuing transport permits with 58 996 new applications having been approved since November 2004. About 2 500 permits have been issued all over Namibia between 1 January, 2020 and 31 January, 2021. “The corruption there is unquestionable, it’s not even a delay as people are trying to portray. Taxis threaten double charge . . . as fares return to N$12

Andrew Kathindi Controversial Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) boss Werner Januarie has warned that should the government insist returning the fares charged by taxis back to N$12, steps will be taken to force passengers to pay double, arguing that the law makes provision for this. “Under the regulations of the Roads Authority Act 17 of 1999, taxis are allowed to charge double when they drop a passenger where there is no taxi rank. There is a difference between a taxi rank and a taxi stop. It’s two completely different things.” It is generally understood that due to the lack…

Taxis plan N$15.40 fare

Andrew Kathindi The Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) has given unilateral notice of their own 10 percent taxi fare increment for 1 September, which they hope will increase the current N$14 rate for a taxi trip to N$15.40. This, comes as the Union had previously attempted to make the N$14 increment, which the Ministry of Works and Transport had announced in May as a subsidy during the state of emergency, permanent. The union had argued that the increase would be on the basis of a notice that they had given in 2018 which government did not approve. “For the…

The Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) has given the government a 72-hour ultimatum to consult them on the way forward regarding the loading of taxis, demanding that its members revert to full loads of four passengers. “What we are doing, is we’re not working in response to the taxi union. We are working in addressing the plight of the nation, passing…

Govt, NTTU clash over taxi fares

Andrew Kathindi Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) has rejected government’s dismissal of its call to have the 15 percent taxi fare hike made permanent. Taxi fares were increased to the current N$14 from N$12 as part of government efforts to cushion the taxi sector during the state of emergency as they are no longer allowed to carry their full load. In agreeing to the increase, Minister of Works and Transport, John Mutorwa, informed the NTTU that government was not going to indulge in discussions over the increment becoming permanent because the 15 percent increment had been approved as a…
