As long as there’s capitalist exploitation of workers trade unions shall be relevant

Kae Matundu Tjiparuro Are trade unions in Namibia truly facing a relevance crisis in Namibia as social analysts would postulate in a recent article in the New Era daily. For Yours Truly Ideologically most of the analysts completely missed the ball, especially in their analyses that trade unions are facing a relevance crisis. Under the current capitalist dispensation, and its attendant siphoning off of profits by hiring the labour of the workers and having them toiling a quick fix exploitation of Namibia’s national resources, the workers cannot and should not expect eternal relieve. Instead of perpetual exploitation, up and until…

Should the court decide employee work orders?

The Shoprite strike is a sign of a healthy democracy. Workers have the right to organize and insist on their priorities. When a legal dispute is declared there are laws in play that must be respected by all sides. The concern is the initial ruling of Judge Shafima Ueitele. He interdicted Shoprite from redeploying existing employees to do the work of an employee who was out on strike. Such a sweeping decision is rightfully under appeal. Its ramifications for all businesses in Namibia are severe. Firing workers legally on strike and then hiring outside ‘scab’ labour is illegal. The unclear…

Labour Commission powerless on Shoprite non-compliance

Andrew Kathindi Labour Commissioner Henri Kassen said his office’s hands are tied when it comes to enforcing a Labour Court ruling which unions and Shoprite group employees have accused the retail giant of contravening, as it is outside his jurisdiction. According to the court order delivered on 8 January, Shoprite is not permitted to employ seasonal workers or let other employees do the work of those that are on strike. Shoprite vs workers – a mixed bag of concerns

There are arguments on all sides of the gap in the labour conflict at Shoprite. The solution will not be easy, and each side will end up feeling aggrieved. But, a resolution must be found. There is a need for clarification of ‘temporary’ worker. A part of the list of complaints by Nafau is that ‘temporary’ workers stay on staff for years as if they are permanent. They do the same jobs as ‘permanent’ employees. And yet, they have no benefits and no job security. There is a loophole being exploited. The call for a boycott and demonstrations should yield…

Nafau accuses Shoprite of ignoring judgement …as Thursday AR demonstrations loom

Andrew Kathindi Namibia Food and Allied Workers Union (Nafau) Secretary General Jacob Penda has accused the Shoprite group of not complying with terms of a High Court judgement issued last week. In the case of Nafau vs Shoprite, Justice Shafimana Ueitele on 8 January ordered that the retail chain “not to hire so-called seasonal staff or "fixed term" employees for the purpose of performing, in whole or in part, the work of the employees who embarked on a strike as from 23 December 2020 onwards for the duration of the strike.” However, the company has allegedly continued to disobey the…
